No, not unless the U.K. has a rule about giving up your citizenship after you take an oath of citizenship in another country.

I have dual citizenship, ie USA & Taiwan. I want to return to Taiwan for employment. I was told to use my Taiwan passport from start to end of my trip. I should have no problem with USA side as I just need to show my US passport to the airline staff if they ask. But how about Taiwan Airport immigration? I renewed my Taiwan passport 2 yrs ago in USA and my Taiwan passport is brand new...no stamp at all. How should I explain to the Taiwan Immigration shd they ask? This is very urgent, would appreciate help as soon as possible.
Dear Anonymous:
Do i understand it correctly that i have to have been married for 3 years prior to filing for naturalization or can i start the process earlier than the "3-year limit"? the reason why i ask is that with the current "lag" in INS processing, it is very likely it will take 1-2 years from you file until you get a response, thus passing the 3-year requirement while being in process by INS.

dear sirs,
I would like to know if there is any alternative to a Zimbabwean Passport, we are so limited and trying to obtain Visa's for travel to most countries is an absolute nightmare.Unfortunately I was born in Zimbabwe so I do't think there are any options open to me. My son has an Italian passport his father is Italian. However I never married his Dad so i don't qualify for this. My ancestory goes back to South Africa and even further back to Germany and Vienna. Does anyone know of any loop holes in the system that may help me out.
Please may someone confirm the following for me. I have a son who is entitled to an Italian Passport. He has a double-barrelled surname because his father and I never married so we gave him both our names. His surname is Bellini-Martin. Bellini being his father's name. on application of his passport I was told by the Italian Consulate that the Italians do not accept double-barrelled surnames and that his passport would be issued in the name of Bellini. Surely this is not correct as it does not match his birth certificate. Surely it should not matter what his surname is he has a right to an Italian passport because of who his father is. Please help
Please help; VERY URGENT
To whom it may concern,
I don't know if this board is still active because I only see Questions and no answer.

Hello!
By Fredrick W. Voigtmann on Monday, September 25, 2000 - 02:42 pm:
Dual citizenship is not favored by U.S. law. However, the U.S. doesn't care if you keep your previous citizenship when you become naturalized. Just don't take another counrtry's citizenship oath after obtaining U.S. citizenship. Also, do not vote in another country's elections or serve in another country's military.
I hope this information is helpful.

While this Bulletin Board is for immigration questions, we will answer your money question this one time. The US government will not give you any money. You will have to acquire it, earn it, or borrow it, just like anyone else.

I became an American Citizen a week before my trip and didn't have time to do my passport, I now only have my citizenship cerificate with me.
My question is...
How long can I stay in Brazil and what do I need to get back to US as far as documents.
Can I fly back only with my Citizenship Certificate?
Thank you for your attention.
By ImmigrationHelp on Monday, April 29, 2002 - 09:27 pm:
US law provides that in order to maintain your US citizenship, you must not establish a residence in a foreign country for at least one year after acquiring citizenship.
You should be able to enter the US with only your certificate of naturalization. However, the transportation company may give you a problem. Therefore, you should check with the airline that you plan on using to enter the US to see if they will accept only your naturalization certificate.
If not, you should go to the US consulate in Brazil and apply for a US passport. Good luck.

Your information that dual citizen should not vote in his second country's elections may be inaccurate. See:
www.richw.org/dualcit/cases.html.
By ImmigrationHelp on Friday, May 10, 2002 - 10:53 pm:
Thank you for the information. As you correctly point out, the US Supreme Court in Afroyim v. Rusk held that the mere voting in another country's elections is not usually enough to strip the person of US citizenship. However, in some cases it may be sufficient if the action was accompanied by an intent to give up US citizenship.
Most likely, that is the reason that Mr. Voigtmann cautioned against voting in a foreign election. Best wishes.

here is some info regarding the dual citizenship.
On 25 October 1994, President Clinton signed Public Law 103-416 (108 Stat. 4305), the "Immigration and Nationality Technical Corrections Act of 1994". This bill made several notable changes to the laws pertaining to naturalization.
Previously, candidates for US citizenship were required to state that they intended to reside permanently in the US following naturalization. This requirement was repealed by Congress.
The law had previously stated that a newly naturalized US citizen who, within one year following his naturalization, abandoned his US residence and set up a permanent residence outside the US (whether in his country of origin, or in any other country) was presumed to have misrepresented his intentions regarding permanent residence on his citizenship application (though this presumption could be overcome by appropriate evidence to the contrary), and on this basis could have his US citizenship cancelled retroactively. This provision was also repealed.
People, born outside the US, who had US citizenship at birth but later lost it because they failed to spend enough time in the US later on (the provision upheld in Rogers v. Bellei, but repealed by Congress in 1978), could now regain their citizenship (non-retroactively) by taking the naturalization oath.

You just need to submit the N-400, two residency-type photos, and a copy of your green card, together with the appropriate filing fee.
Read the instructions to the N-400 form for information on where to send the application. Good luck.
By ImmigrationHelp on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 - 03:57 pm:
If you will have 5 years of permanent residence on July 2, 2002, then you can file your application for naturalization up to 90 days before that date, or any time after April 3, 2002. Good luck.

You can only file your application 3 months prior to the statutory time period required under the law. In other words, if you are basing your application for naturalization on a marriage to a US citizen, you can file 3 months before acquiring 3 years of residence, provided that your spouse has been a US citizen for at least 3 years. Good luck.
By ImmigrationHelp on Tuesday, July 2, 2002 - 09:19 pm:
The term "American Indian born in Canada" as used in section 289 of the Act includes only persons possessing 50 per centum or more of the blood of the American Indian race. It does not include a person who is the spouse or child of such an Indian or a person whose membership in an Indian tribe or family is created by adoption, unless such person possesses at least 50 per centum or more of such blood.
Therefore, for you to reside as a permanent resident of the US, you will have to prove that you meet the above requirements. Good luck.

My question is:
I am 34 years old and an American citizen. My mother is a Brasilian who gave up her Brasilian citizenship when I was 21. I am planing on a trip to Brasil in the near future and have received a call from the Brasilian counsulate that I may not be eligible for a Visa (Haven't had a direct conversation yet). I have never renounced anything and I would favor a dual citizen. How long does it take to get a foreign passport. Would it be faster to renounce and get the visa? I have 79 days before my trip. I still have a lot of family in Brasil.
Thank You!!

I live in United Kingdom but have a Bangladeshi passport. I came here at the age of 6/7 (now 28 years old) approx. 1982/84 with my mother & brother to join my father in the UK. I went back to Bangladesh once for approx. 2 years since. I have been to nursery school, high school, college and working for well established and government organisations in the UK since then and currently at a job now.
I wish to travel to the USA for 2 weeks, already have obtained a holiday visa from the USA Embassy in London. But Embassy Assistant who issued the visa said I will/may need to show proof of residency in UK and intentions of returning, otherwise I may not be allowed back in UK from USA because I do not hold a British passport. Will I require anything else as I cannot find any documents/proof of residency in the UK. (Documents probably misplaced somewhere - it was such a long time when we came to the UK). Would any other documents help ie, national insurance card, medical card, own property in UK, or current job contract - i can provide any of those. Please Please advice....Many Thanks!

I am a German citizen, living in the US for the past 3 and half years. I soon, would like to apply for naturalization to become a US citizen but just found out that I have to fill out and pay the German government more than 200 euro to be able to keep my German citizenship.
Anyone having experiences with this, what did you do or will do? Did you let the German government know about receiving an additional citizenship or did you just left everything the way it is?
I appreciate any answer, help, recommendations and that you for responding to my posting!
