Social Security Number

Hello

I entered the US on August 6 on a K1 Fiancee Visa. My husband and I were married on October 6 and posted our Change of Status papers to the INS in our state yesterday (October 30). I also included an Employment Authorisation Document with my application so that I can get a green card to work while my change of status application is pending.

My question is ... how do I go about getting a social security number? My husband and I went to our local social security office about a week after we were married to apply for one and they told me I had to file with the INS first. Now I have sent in my papers to the INS what do I need to take into Social Security so that they give me a number? Should I wait until I get the receipt notice for my I-485 form and take that in with my marriage certificate??

This whole process is really unclear!! I was led to believe I had to file my change of status papers in person and having gone in to do that they told me I had to post them!!

I really appreciate your help.

Dear M&R:

Before Social Security will issue a number to you, you must obtain work authorization from INS. As soon as you receive the work authorization document, you should go back to the Social Security office and apply for your card. Good luck.

dear immigrationhelp,

i am on an f1 visa and my husband and kids on an f2. i already have social security number for campus employment. my questions are:

1. can i later apply for work authorization permit if i want to work outside of the campus?
2. can my husband in any circumstances be allowed to get work permit?
3. i have a pending f4 petition which is almost current, can i immediately apply for change of status once it becomes current or do i have to wait for any notice from INS?

thank you for your time.

Dear Jane:

We answer your questions as follows:

1. Yes.

2. Only if he qualifies under one of the employment-based visa categories.

3. You and your family can immediately apply for adjustment of status as soon as the priority date becomes current.

Good luck.

Dear immigration help,
my fiance is currently outside the country. i am confused on whether to apply for the k1 visa or the f1 visa since he is currently applying to graduate schools in the u.s.
Will he still be able to go to graduate school with the k1 visa? how about getting government funding for school? I appreciate all the information you can give. Thank you.

Hi, I applied for an Employment Authorization Form I-765, in a month it was approved and they told me that they ordered a new card wich will be mailed to me as soon as it was ready... what kind of card is this? the SSN card? or the EA Card? how long would it take to get that card in my mai box? an if it is just the EA then I have to request the SSN? or i'll come all together?

Thank for your kind help
