Probably not much. The immigration process is getting longer and longer. However, if you filed for permanent residence, you are eligible to also file for employment authorization on immigration form I-765. This should be issued to you within 90 days, after which you can obtain your social security number. Good luck.

my father filed for my greencard about two years ago when we moved here from Canada. I'm on an H1-B visa and was wondering in order to get my social security # do I have to get a lawyer or can I file the I-765 form like in the question above? Also what are the approximate expenses?
