My question pertains to providing INS with satisfactory proof of filing past years’ income tax returns and payment of past taxes to IRS at a naturalization interview.
Dear Anonymous:
I am required to provide original IRS 1722 letter listing text information for the last five years. That is what the letter I got form INS. What is this letter about and how do I get it.

hope you found the answer but here it is:
Hi there..
I understand that IRS Form 4506 can be used to obtain a copy or transcript of past 1040 tax forms, but I imagine that copies of income tax returns produced from Form 4506 would not satisfy INS at a naturalization interview because the copies do not reflect possible changes made to the return by me or the IRS after initial filing, nor do they provide tax account information. I recall reading something about a “Letter 1722” that the IRS provides to provide tax account information.
Of course, I do have photocopies of my past income tax returns in my files.
What kind of proof will satisfy INS at a naturalization interview that past income taxes have been filed and paid?
Thank you.

You are posing a hypothetical and we don't know if you will be requested to provide certain information and, if so, what information exactly will be requested.
Normally, your copy of the tax returns is sufficient. If not, INS will tell you exactly what they want. Make sure you get this request in writing. If you comply, you will have no problems. Good luck.

If you don't have you tax returns or you filed electronically, call the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 1-800-829-1040 to get printouts of your Federal income tax returns for the current and prior years. Ask for printouts of your tax returns or Letter 1722, which is a summary of your tax returns. This service is free from IRS.

I am also required to provide original IRS 1722 letter listing tax information for past 3 years (marriage based) I called the IRS 1800 number and received for the past 3 years:
Transcripts of Tax Return & Transcripts of Tax Account. No where on either letter for each of the years does it state "Letter 1722". Nor was it an option on the IRS #.
Seems so confusing to me (perhaps being 8 months pregnant doesn't help ;) ).
There was an option to obtain copies of the 3 returns for a fee. Is this the option i should have selected? I was under the impression that this was meant to be freely obtained.
Thanks..
Any clarification would be appreciated.
