Interview for naturalization

Immigration Links - Immigration Forum: Naturalization/Citizenship: Interview for naturalization
By Judy on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 - 06:26 pm:

Dear immigration help:

I got a green card through employment (NIW, petitioned myself) five years ago. So I didn't use employer sponsor. I am just wondering if everyone will have to go through interview for naturalization. In my case, what kind of questions immigration officer may ask during interview? Are they going to check my employment for the last 5 years to see if I am still working in the similar field which my NIW petition was based on? I went to business school 3 months after I received my green card. I has been working for a big bank since I received MBA 3 years ago. But my NIW was based on my scientific expertise in health care industry. Am I in trouble for naturalization or green card renewal?

Thank you very much!

Dear Judy:

You will be interviewed on your application for naturalization. At your interview, as well as on your application, you must list your employment for the past 5 years.

There is no requirement that you work in your field for any particular period of time. What is important is that you intended to work in that field at the time that you obtained permanent residence. If you only worked in the field for three months and subsequently decided to go to school, that will not defeat your initial intent. Good luck.

Hi,
I have a question. I have to leave U.S. for a family emergency for about 2 months but my citizenship interview is scheduled right on the time that I will be absent. What do I do and is there any consequences? I hope you can help me, Thank you.

Dear Anonymous:

You can request a continuance of your interview. You should take a letter requesting the continuance to the INS office where your interview is scheduled and make sure that your copy is stamped.

Another good idea, instead of the above, is to have a friend or family member take the letter at the date and time of the interview. In that way, there is a much better chance that the request gets in the file, since they will have it right in front of them.

Make sure you follow up with INS thereafter to make sure that you are promptly rescheduled. Good luck.

Hello, I have a naturlization interview in 2 weeks. Unfortunately, i recently lost my green-card. I was going to file the I-90 and go to my local INS office for a stamp on my passport. Would you know if I can still go for my naturalization interview even without the original green card?

Thanks.
