Dear ImmigrationHelp. My mother is going to file her N-400. The spelling of her last name on Green Card is slightly different from the one she uses (her Social Security card). What should she do to change the spelling permanently when applying for her citizenship?
Thenk you for your help.
Regina

Dear Regina:

When a person files for naturalization, they have the right to request a legal change of name. She should just tell the immigration officer what name she wishes to use, and her certificate will be issued in that name.

She will, however, have to prove that she is the same person whose picture and name appear on the green card. Good luck.

Dear Anonymous:

Part 1D of the N-400 asks if you want to change your name. Just fill out this portion of the form.

You do not need an affidavit or any court papers. Good luck.

Dear Regina:
I have already filed N-400 for naturalization and I filled out new name also under DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR NAME? I also filled out HAVE YOU EVER USED ANOTHER NAME? Because I used it at work and college. All the legal documents(passport, alien card, and social security card) have current name. Do I need affidavit or court papers?
Actually, my current name and new name are not that different. I am just using shorter name(eliminated last four latters of the name)so people can pronounce it properly.
Thank you

Hello help!

A year ago I changed my name in Part 1D of the N-400, so now my passport, my naturalization certificate and my driver's license say the new name. However, the social security administration still has my OLD name (I thought it would get automatically updated). Unfortunately, I have lost my copy of the N-400 form. How can I prove my name change? Everything (passport, license..etc) are now in NEW name, and I don't have a piece of paper showing the name change. (I thought I'd never need those papers so I threw them away) Is there a way I can get a copy of my N-400?

I have my naturalization certificate, did not know that I could have changed my name during the interview. How can I change my name now? Is there special forms to fill out to change name for people with a naturalization certificate?

Dear immigrationhelp, Is it possible that my great-great-grandfather changed his name from Marriotti to Marriott while immigrating to Nova Scotia?

I obtained a naturalization certificate through my parents who became citizens but because I did not file for a name change before my naturalization, the name on my certificate, being my chinese name, is different than all my other documentation (including my social security, driver's license, etc.). Since then, I have filed for a name change and it was passed. How can I get a new naturalization certificate with my new name?

Hello Immigration Help,

I have my naturalization certificate. I did not get my last name changed to match my husband's last name during the interview. After I got my naturalization certificate, I have changed my last name in my social security card and passport showing my marriage certificate. How do I go about changing my last name in my naturalization certificate?
