I hope you can answer my question. My husband got his registration card ander Amnesty in 1980s. He was supposed to receive Green Card a year later, but every time he'd come to INS (Laguna Niguel office, CA), they told him to wait for some notifications by mail. Finally he gave up. Then we met each other in late 90s and the question about his GC rose again since I'm from another country. INS gave him his GC but now he has to wait 5 years to be a citizen. Is there any way to speed up this process? Would any recomendation letters help? Should we seek help from a local congressman? My husband has been here since 1978.

Unfortunately, the waiting times for naturalization are statutory. That means that the law specifically states that a person may not file for naturalization until he has 5 years as a permanent resident. There are a few exceptions, such as through marriage to a US citizen, but in his case he will have to wait 5 years. Neither a congressperson nor reference letters will help in this case. Good luck.

My husband has completed his 5-yr residency requirement last Dec.2000 and has already applied for citizenship. He used to live in San Jose but has now transfered in Hayward (California). I would like to know how long (months/years) will the waiting period to get a citizenship in that area/State. If you could pls. give me more or less the exact months. Thank you so much

You can get the latest processing times for naturalization cases by clicking on the link entitled "INS Local Office Processing Times" on our Home page. You will have to find out which INS office in California has jurisdiction over Hayward, and then check that office's processing times as indicated above. Good luck.
