INS Service Center Mailrooms Closed Due to Anthrax Scare

October 15, 2001

The US Immigration and Naturalization Service has confirmed that all Service Center mailrooms have been closed as a result of an incident on Saturday in which white powder was found in an envelope received at the Vermont Service Center.

In addition, mail intake at INS offices has been halted while headquarters releases guidance to the field on mail handling procedures.  It is expected that mail intake at all offices, except the Service Centers, should be resumed by tomorrow.

Regular mail intake at the service centers should resume within the next few days.

INS has indicated that no one will be penalized due to delays in mail receipt.
