Amnesty

The word amnesty originates from the word amnesia which means "to forget." If Congress were to pass an Amnesty Bill this year, it would allow illegal aliens a path towards citizenship for approximately 11 to 20 million undocumented aliens living in the United States. Prior to IRCA in 1986, amnesty was previously granted on a case-by-basis and not on a group basis.

Since 1965, seven Amnesty Bills have passed and are as follows:

1. Immigration and Reform Control Act (IRCA) of 1986;
2. Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) Section 245(i) of 1994;
3. Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) Section 245(i) of 1997;
4. Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) of 1997;
5. Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act (HRIFA) of 1998;
6. Late Amnesty of 2000 (IRCA); and
7. Legal Immigration Family Equity Act (LIFE) of 2000.
